2020 Class of FIBA Hall of Fame: Tara VanDerveer

Indeed only a couple of months ago, she proudly led Stanford University to the NCAA Championship, the third during her 36-year career with the organization, having also taken the silverware in 1990 and 1992.

Her NCAA exploits are exceptional and last year, she overtook another legend Pat Summit for the most wins in women’s college basketball history – a number that now stands at a record-breaking and jaw-dropping 1,122 victories. They have included a staggering 37 Pac-12 Conference Championships (Regular Season and Tournament), as well as 12 NCAA Final Four appearances.

MIES (Switzerland) – Coaching legend Tara VanDerveer is to be honored for her incredible career on the sideline by being enshrined into the FIBA Hall of Fame Class of 2020.

The American joins eight players and two fellow coaches – Steve Nash (Canada), Isabelle Fijalkowski (France), Agnes Nemeth (Hungary), Mieczyslaw Lopatka (Poland), Modestas Paulauskas (Lithuania), Kenichi Sako (Japan), Park Shin-ja (Korea), Alexander Volkov (Ukraine) and Jure Zdovc (Slovenia), plus playcallers Ruben Magnano (Argentina) and Svetislav Pesic (Serbia), who are all being enshrined as part of the Class of 2020.

The accomplishments of VanDerveer are extensive and that’s no surprise considering her stellar career – one that started more than four decades ago and continues to this day.

In addition to her achievements in the NCAA, VanDerveer also hit a major high on the international stage during 1996, when she masterminded USA taking Olympic gold on home soil in Atlanta. It came two years after having had to settle for a bronze at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.
